Exploding number of international students at Michigan universities causes both tension and cultural exchange benefits

LANSING, MI — Two Michigan universities rank in the top 10 nationally for the number of international students, prompting some to praise the state and others to question whether the schools should set aside more slots for in-state students.

The Great Lakes state ranks ninth for the most foreign students in the nation.

Universities tout the immense growth of international students as an economic driver that contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the state and offers all students a more global perspective.
