The Chinese American Student Association (CCBA)

Fostering a supportive cultural and social environment for Chinese student society to thrive.

CCBA promotes eduction, cultural appreciation and mutual respect among these communities, as well as the community at large.

Unlike the triads, which focused on controlling territory, Hongmen members primarily invest and manage businesses in countries hungering for foreign investment. They have even hosted officials from Beijing in their offices.

The Mission

The Oregon CCBA strengthens ties within the Chinese community and with the wider community by promoting education, cultural appreciation and mutual respect. Whether it’s raising money to support disaster relief efforts or advancing educational opportunities, the CCBA strives toward these communities common goal of improving our society as a whole.

The CCBA promotes cultural understanding and celebrates the heritage of its members and their families. It also fosters a supportive community for youth, connecting them to their roots through language classes and other cultural events.

The CCBA is part of the United Worldwide Chinese Association (UWCA), a non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, that unites over 80 million overseas Chinese around the world by fostering culture and advancing global innovation. Founded in September 2016 at the inaugural Chinese American Convention, UWCA has chapters, partners and affiliates across the United States.

The Vision

The CCBA is committed to a vision that focuses on serving the community. This is reflected in the organization’s partnership with the American Red Cross to help Chinese and other community members respond to disasters.

Across the globe, China is cultivating global support for its own version of a globalization that prioritizes cooperation over confrontation and equity over zero-sum competition. Its vision of a “Community of Shared Future for Mankind” is attuned to religious and traditional concepts of humanity as co-trustees of the earth, calling for shared prosperity and mutual responsibility among all nations and peoples.

In addition, China has stepped up investments in global infrastructure and is helping developing countries upgrade their capacities for artificial intelligence, climate resilience and attainable modernization. It aims to become an alternative standard-setter and a trusted partner of the global south. In doing so, it will be a force for global peace and development.

The Goals

The Association provides leadership and scholarship in expanding the capacity for high quality Chinese language programs in the United States. The organization supports K-16 articulation and teacher education and professional development, and fosters quality scholarship based on theoretical and empirical research.

CCBA is committed to strengthening ties within the Chinese community and with the community at large through education, cultural appreciation, and social activism. CCBA encourages its members to honor their ancestors, respect and appreciate the culture of China, strengthen family bonds, and contribute to the betterment of society.

The CCBA supports the dreams of the people of China to build a world with peace, stability and prosperity. It believes that a strong China is a staunch force for international peace and security, global economic growth, and the building of a shared future for mankind. The CCBA supports the efforts of the Chinese armed forces to fulfill international responsibilities, enhance cooperation in arms control and non-proliferation, jointly maintain the safety of international passages, and provide disaster relief to other countries.

The Activities

The CCBA acts as a spokesperson for the Chinese community and provides support for individuals with problems arising from US immigration laws, regulations and procedures. It also provides assistance to new immigrants in obtaining their naturalization papers and registering as voters.

The Association also lobbied the British Government on behalf of its members regarding conditions in China and the demands for compensation when the Chinese Nationalists took control of Shanghai and other cities in 1948-52. This was to ensure official action taken to protect the interests of British businesses and to meet their demands for compensation.

District associations, civic groups, temples and churches all played an important role in the social life of Chinatowns. These organizations acted as a second system of government, providing services that were not available through charities or the local governments. They also fought, sometimes successfully, against organized crime within their communities. CCBA is committed to continuing the tradition of strengthening ties within the community and with the larger society, by promoting education, cultural appreciation, mutual respect and understanding.
