The Chinese Association

CHINESE ASSOCIATION was a mercantile body representing the interests of those engaged in trade with China, Hong Kong and Japan. Membership included representatives of the large China Houses like Swire & Sons; Jardine, Matheson & Co; and Paton & Baldwins, as well as Members of Parliament and retired colonial and military officials.

Membership

Many immigrants joined associations by family names, locations or professions to help them in their new homes. The Library has rosters of such associations, and if your ancestors were members you may find useful information about their life here in America on the lists or in the Association’s records.

The China Association was a mercantile body set up to represent the interests of those with commercial dealings in China and Hong Kong. Its main role was to correspond with the Foreign Office regarding the various trade grievances of British traders in China and to press for intervention from the Government.

The Stanley and Marvel Chong Foundation supports scholarships for students of Chinese descent, as well as promoting cultural heritage and community engagement. Its mission is to honor the memory of this founding member and continue his legacy. Membership is open to all chemistry professionals working in chemical research development, application, education, management, media and services around the world.

Committees

The Association’s committees host a variety of events, from networking to panel discussions and specialized programs with China-based experts.

The MA&PR Committee provides a platform for member companies to share insights on the latest marketing and PR trends in China. The Outbound Investment Committee supports members to do business in China through providing knowledge and best practices on outbound investments and by helping them find the right partners and opportunities.

At the local level, the Chinese Constitution charges local congresses and governments with legislating on specific matters pertaining to their localities. The local government also has the authority to draft regulations or detailed implementation rules similar to those a State Council ministry might draft. Like the NPC, local legislatures have their own specialized bureaucracy to help draft and review legislation. In recent years, many LPCs have experimented with methods to notify the public about hearings and formats for the drafting process. Shengwei Changwei are accorded fushengji rank if they hold provincial-level office (as deputy governor or vice-governor, for example). Shengwei Changwei are given this rank even when holding concurrent positions in the higher ranks of a local party committee or municipal government.

Meetings

The conference seeks to provide a platform for in-depth discussions and exchanges among international experts and scholars on China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. Papers, panels and roundtables on a broad range of topics, such as economy, society, history, culture, foreign policy, politics and law are welcomed.

The upcoming meeting is expected to endorse policies aimed at bolstering China’s technological prowess and fortifying national security. It is also likely to lay the groundwork for new incentives for foreign investment, which are in line with Xi’s call for “common prosperity” to allow ordinary Chinese to enjoy the benefits of economic growth.

The conference will be held both in-person and online simultaneously. The conference will feature keynote speeches, plenary sessions and workshops. In addition, the conference will feature an exhibition area and a variety of networking opportunities. We invite you to join us and participate in this landmark event! The program committee is now accepting proposals for papers, panel and roundtables.

Activities

The association also provided a platform for Chinese students to integrate with the local community, through sponsored lectures, annual Chinese holidays celebrations, general body assemblies and social events. These events provide forums for students to experience and discuss Chinese culture.

CCBA also works with mainstream organizations to help the community. For example, in 2004, CCBA worked with city officials to ensure Chinatown residents had bilingual ballots for the presidential election and assisted laid-off electronics and rubber stamp manufacturing workers who were seeking severance pay and job training opportunities.

The Society is a platform for unity for Chinese and non-Chinese alike, to promote cultural exchanges and friendship. It hosts meaningful events like Interview Workshops, Life in the Big Four and Western Dating. It also propagates the spirit of teamwork by organising annual cultural show productions and sports competitions. All these events help to build up a positive image of the Society as well as promoting academic communication between its members.
