The Chinese American Society

CHSA works to collect, preserve and illuminate the remarkable story of Chinese Americans. Its members consistently oppose imperialism and hegemony, strengthen solidarity with oppressed peoples of the world, and strive for peace.

The Articles of Association establishes the internal governance structure and operational guidelines for a company. It also delineates the rights, responsibilities and obligations of shareholders and directors.

Membership

The Association is made up of representatives from political parties, government organs, academic institutions, cultural and art circles, media, NGOs and the business sector. Its highest organ is the Executive Council, which is elected every five years.

The CCBA works with many mainstream organizations to serve New York City’s Chinese community. For example, after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami disaster, it helped to organize an emergency community-wide fundraising campaign. It also helped to train people who wanted to become business owners in Chinatown.

IACMR seeks to advance scholarly research in the area of management with a focus on China through its publications, activities and programs. It emphasizes ethics, rigor and relevance in its scholarship. It encourages volunteerism and a spirit of service from its members. Individuals who are interested in the work of the Society may apply to become regular members of the Association. They are entitled to vote in ICSA referendum petitions, hold office and sign nomination petitions. They also receive free hard copies of ICSA Bulletin and have the right to free access to Statistica Sinica.

Events

During its long history, ACA has spearheaded efforts from cultural celebrations to social justice initiatives, always striving to improve the lives of Chinese Americans. Its unwavering dedication has uplifted countless lives and inspired a legacy of unity and resilience.

The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, and is known for its zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves) races and street markets that feature many traditional foods and products. Declared by UNESCO to be an intangible cultural heritage, it is also a time to honor and pay respect to one’s ancestors.

Join the Chinese Mutual Aid Association at Discover’s Asian Professionals ERG to celebrate Lunar New Year with a variety of exciting performances. This event is open to all Discover employees.

Fundraising

In addition to the aforementioned annual dinner, the organization held regular meetings of its members and social events to raise funds. The earliest known fundraiser was a banquet for “gentlemen with some connection to the Far East” which raised £160 and was held in March 1889.

In the modern era, fundraising activities have become more sophisticated and targeted to specific demographics. The Chinese community is no exception. Loretta Lam, a leading expert in ethnic marketing and fundraising in the Asian market, explains that it is important to build relations with the audience before asking them for donations.

For example, she suggests raising money through a Zongzi sale, which offers traditional foods and drinks during the Chinese New Year festival. This is an ideal way to support a cause while promoting Chinese culture. She also advises organizations to seek sponsorship for their fundraisers.

Education

The Association is committed to the development of preK-12 Chinese language and culture frameworks, and coordinating knowledge and resources in this field nationwide. It provides teachers and program builders with pedagogical tools like CAVO (Computer Adaptive Vocabulary Assessment), Pathways to Advanced Skills series and more.

ACS member schools offer Chinese as second language classes and cultural arts classes to everyone regardless of ethnic or cultural background. Many of them also actively participate in local International Cultural events and serve as family oriented Chinese Community centers.

CEAIE selects and sends English teaching assistants each year to China. This program is listed in the China-UK High-Level People-to-People Exchange Mechanism and Sino-UK Education Partnership Action Plan. In 2014, it also became part of the China-France Language Assistant Exchange Program organized by CIEP. This is the first time that China has been a partner of this program. The selection process includes TEFL training, round-trip airfare to China and back, free housing, and a monthly salary comparable to that of Chinese teachers.
