Founded in 1889, the China Association was first proposed at an inaugural dinner held at the Thatched House Club in London. It was formally constituted on 11 April 1889, with Sir Alfred Dent as chairman. In March 1890, the Association held its first annual dinner. In its first year, it had 111 members. It was funded through membership subscriptions, entrance fees, and donations. The Association was the first organization to bring Chinese culture to Britain.

In addition to its political and cultural activities, the Chinese Association was also a leading fund-raising force in China. It had many years of experience lobbying the government on many issues, including immigration law and immigration reform. In addition, the CBA was well-known among the Chinatown community for its neutrality. It spoke for all its members regardless of their ethnicity or surname, and even helped mediate between various organizations in the Chinese community.

The Chinese community was a small community prior to the Civil Rights Act. Chinese immigration to the United States was discouraged by the Six Companies, which later led to discrimination and assimilation. During this time, new Chinese immigrants often arrived in America with little savings. Most of their money was spent on transportation. Many had trouble learning the language and English. In order to survive, many of them joined gangs and struggled to earn a living.

Several conservative Chinese felt uncertain about the future of their political situation in Malaya. They feared that predominantly Chinese organisations had a left-wing bias. This was one of the reasons why they largely avoided the Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Assembly Halls. However, this has changed with the passage of time. During the early years of Malaya’s independence, the Chinese community was not free from political tensions.
