When the western world began to impose sanctions against China after the Tiananmen massacre in 1989, Beijing looked first to its Asian neighbors for support. Since its inception, CAST has been a major contributor to China’s scientific and technological development and popularization of science and technology.

In 1982, CAST launched a national high-tech research program that has become one of the most successful government-led S&T initiatives. This program has pooled small numbers of excellent researchers to conduct frontier-oriented research in selected high-tech fields, narrowing China’s gaps with developed nations, stimulating S&T advances in relevant fields, nurturing new generation of high-caliber technological talents and forming foundations for the future of China’s high-tech industry and social development.

CAST’s mission is to support the prosperity and development of science and technology, to popularize science and technology among the public, and to develop large numbers of professional talents. It also supports the education of the next generation of Chinese citizens.
