The Chinese Community in the United States

Chinese community

The Chinese community in the United States is a diverse group of people. Although they have many similarities, they also have a wide range of individual strengths and weaknesses. This article highlights several issues that Chinese families are facing in the United States.

Low breastfeeding rates

In the past decade, breastfeeding rates have increased modestly in China. This is mainly attributed to various initiatives undertaken in the 1990s. However, the situation is far from satisfactory.

In general, exclusive breastfeeding is still far from its national target in China. Moreover, negative cultural perceptions among the public deter the practice. It is advisable to increase awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and help mothers to overcome these challenges. Personalized assistance by medical professionals can also increase the exclusive breastfeeding rate.

One of the best methods to promote breastfeeding in China is through personalized help from medical professionals. Breastfeeding clinics can provide continuous support to women.

Iron deficiency anemia

Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common types of anemia in the Chinese community. A recent study aims to evaluate the relationship between different forms of anemia and neurobehavioral development.

In order to examine the relationship between iron deficiency and neurobehavioral development, the study enrolled 2601 children from 6 to 24 months of age. The subjects underwent routine blood tests and neurobehavioral assessments. After analyzing the data, a series of linear regression models were used to analyze the relationships between the two.

The results indicate that iron deficiency anemia negatively correlated with gross motor and adaptability development. However, the association between iron overload and neurobehavioral development was not significant.

Mental illness

In China, mental illness is considered to be a malevolent spiritual force. Symptoms may include socially disruptive behaviours, such as violence. Mental health services are generally limited to hospital-based care, despite the fact that there is a great need for community-based care. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been recommending community-based treatment for years.

Mental illnesses can have a huge impact on the quality of life of both patients and their families. For example, family members may experience affiliate stigma, or the concern that a mental illness diagnosis will limit their future prospects. It is important to provide family members with ongoing support in the community.

Perinatal program for Chinese-speaking families at the Montreal Chinese Hospital

The perinatal program at the Montreal Chinese Hospital is a prime example of the health care system’s ability to improve the quality of life of its patients. Originally started as a pilot study in 1989, the program is now cofunded by the Hospital Foundation and the Federal Department of Multiculturalism. It provides a range of services to the Chinese community including treatment, preventive care, and educational and recreational activities.

In addition to their flagship paediatric and maternity service, the hospital has a day center to provide an outlet for patients to spend their days away from the wards. There are classes, activities, and freebies for visitors. During the day, a range of professionals assist residents with their needs.

Multi-class and multi-skilled profile

Among the hundreds of millions of Chinese people swarming the streets of Beijing and Shanghai, the multi-class and multi-skilled profile of Chinese society is a thing of the past. This isn’t to say that the Chinese haven’t maintained their traditions since antiquity. In fact, there are a handful of ethnic groups that have maintained their cultural idiosyncrasies in the 21st century and beyond. The most notable among them is the Han, a sub-ethnic group that has been a part of China for the better part of a millennia. They have a few distinguishable facets, not the least of which is their own language. It is therefore not surprising that the Chinese are well aware of their own identity, and a little self-control will go a long way in maintaining their rich heritage.

Social isolation

The Chinese community has a number of elderly people who are socially isolated. This condition is associated with a variety of health issues, such as loneliness, lack of social contacts, health services, and housing. Despite this, few studies have investigated the impact of social isolation on health in the Chinese population.

A scoping review on the current state of knowledge regarding social isolation and loneliness among the Chinese community has been published. Some findings suggest a causal link between the two.

Social isolation is an issue that is causing significant concern in the Chinese community. It has been linked to increased psychiatric risks in later life. Despite this, few interventions have been developed for Chinese older adults. In order to address this problem, more innovative services should be developed.
